Your BLS card is the one credential that every single travel nursing assignment requires, no exceptions. And yet it is the credential that travel nurses let expire more often than any other. Maybe because it feels routine. Maybe because a two-year renewal cycle creates a false sense of security. Whatever the reason, an expired BLS has killed more assignment opportunities than almost any other compliance issue.
Here is everything you need to know about keeping your BLS current as a travel nurse in 2026.
Which BLS Course Do You Actually Need
Not all BLS certifications are created equal, and this is where a lot of confusion starts. The course you need is the American Heart Association BLS Provider course, sometimes listed as "BLS for Healthcare Providers." This is the only BLS certification that is universally accepted by hospitals and travel nursing agencies.
Red Cross BLS, Military Training Network BLS, and various other provider courses exist, but they are not accepted everywhere. Some facilities will accept them, but many will not. If you want to avoid any issues, stick with AHA.
The AHA BLS Provider course covers high-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants, the use of AEDs, ventilation with a bag-mask device, team dynamics in resuscitation, and choking relief. It includes both a written test and a hands-on skills assessment.
This is important. Online-only BLS courses are not accepted by the vast majority of facilities. You need to complete a hands-on skills evaluation with an AHA-approved instructor. You can do the didactic portion online through AHA's HeartCode BLS, but you must complete an in-person skills session to receive your provider card.
When to Renew
BLS certification is valid for two years from the date of issue. Not two years from the date printed on the card, not two years from when you completed the online portion, but two years from the date you completed the full course including the skills evaluation.
Here is the renewal strategy that keeps you out of trouble. Set a reminder 90 days before your expiration date. Schedule your renewal course at least 60 days before expiration. Complete the course at least 30 days before expiration.
Why the 30-day buffer? Because travel nursing compliance works on timelines. If your BLS expires during a contract, most facilities require you to renew before the expiration date, not after. And if you are being submitted for a new assignment, agencies often require that your BLS be valid for the entire duration of the contract. A BLS that expires in week 8 of a 13-week contract is a problem.
Some nurses worry that renewing early shortens their certification period. It does not. Your new two-year period starts from the date of your renewal course, not from your old expiration date. Renewing a month early costs you nothing in terms of certification length.
Where to Get BLS as a Travel Nurse
Finding a BLS class is straightforward when you are at home. But travel nurses are often on assignment in an unfamiliar city, or between assignments and moving around. Here are your options.
AHA Training Centers. Go to the AHA website and use their course finder to locate an authorized training center near you. These centers offer the full BLS Provider course, including the skills evaluation, in a single session that usually takes about four hours.
HeartCode BLS (hybrid option). Complete the didactic and testing portion online through AHA's HeartCode platform, then find a location offering a hands-on skills session. The skills session takes about 30 to 45 minutes. This is often the most convenient option for travel nurses because you can do the online portion on your own schedule and just show up for the short skills check.
Hospital-based courses. Some hospitals offer BLS courses to staff, and occasionally travel nurses working at the facility can attend. Ask your unit manager or education department if this is an option.
Fire stations and community colleges. Many fire departments and community colleges offer AHA BLS courses to the public. These can be cheaper than private training centers and often have more flexible scheduling.
When choosing a course, confirm three things before registering. First, that it is an AHA-authorized course, not a different provider. Second, that it includes a hands-on skills evaluation. Third, that you will receive an AHA BLS Provider eCard or physical card upon completion.
What to Do If Your BLS Expires
If your BLS has already expired, do not panic, but do act immediately. An expired BLS means you cannot be submitted for any new assignments, and if you are mid-contract, you may be pulled from the floor until you recertify.
There is no grace period for BLS expiration. The day after your card expires, you are no longer certified. You need to take a renewal course, not the initial course. The renewal course is shorter because it assumes you already have the foundational knowledge.
If you are currently on assignment and your BLS expires soon, talk to your recruiter immediately. They may be able to help you find a class quickly or work with the facility to ensure there is no gap in your assignment.
Managing Your BLS Card
Once you complete your BLS course, you will receive either a physical card or an eCard. AHA has been moving toward eCards, which are digital versions of your certification that you can access and download from the AHA website.
Immediately after certification, do the following. Download your eCard from the AHA website. Take a clear photo of the front and back of your physical card if you received one. Save the digital copy in your credential file. Upload it to every agency you are currently working with or plan to work with.
Do not rely on a single physical card that you keep in your wallet. Cards get lost, damaged, and faded. Having a digital backup ensures that you can provide proof of certification instantly, no matter where you are.
BLS and Your Career Readiness
BLS is a small thing that creates big problems when it is not handled. It is a four-hour course that you take once every two years. There is no reason to let it become a barrier to your next assignment.
Build BLS renewal into your credential management routine. Know your expiration date. Set your reminders. Complete the renewal early. Upload the new card immediately. It takes minimal effort to stay current, and the cost of letting it lapse is never worth it.
